What is the SAT?
The SAT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States used to test the student’s preparedness for college through testing their English and Math fluency.
Who should take the SAT?
The SAT is for students looking to enroll into a United States college.

What is the SSAT?
The SSAT is a standardized test for the admission of students into independent schools. The SSAT measures the verbal, math and reading skills that are needed for successful performances by students. It is used to determine the level of skill and knowledge in English and Math.
Who should take the SSAT?
The SSAT is for students interested in going to private boarding schools, or independent secondary schools in the U.S. and Canada.

What is the IELTS?
The IELTS is an internationally recognized assessment developed to test the 4 English language skills: listening, reading writing and speaking. It is recognized by over 9000 organizations worldwide, including schools, universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies in over 140 countries.
Who should take the IELTS?
The IELTS is designed to assess the abilities of people aiming to study and work in an English-speaking environment. It is for students who didn not attend 4 years of high school.

What is the Gifted Program Screening Test?
This test is usually administered by Ontario school boards in the early fall of Grade 3. Only those students who score at a predetermined level on the Stage One Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test will be considered for Stage Two, which is a one-on-one intellectual screening. Students who meet the criterion on the Stage Two will be considered for possible identification under the Ministry of Education Category.
Who Should Take the Test?
This test is for students who would like to be identified as a gifted student.

IB School Admissions
IB School Admissions

What is the IB Program?
The program “offers a curriculum that is broad and balanced, conceptual and connected”.
It is designed for motivated students between the ages of 16 and 19 and promotes “healthy relationships, ethical responsibility and personal challenge”.
Who Can Take the Pre-IB Programme Entrance Test?
Students interested in the autumn of their Grade 8 year.

TOPS
Talented Offerings for Programs in the Sciences

What is the TOPS?
It is the Talented Offerings for The Programs in the Sciences located at Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute.
Who Should Take the TOPS?
- The TOPS is for students who are interested in enrichment in the maths, sciences, and language arts. Students do not need to be recognized as “gifted” in order to enroll.
- The overwhelming majority of students selected for TOPS are in Grade 8 applying for a position in Grade 9.
Entrance Exam Format
There are three parts – Science, Math and English.
All successful candidates are required to do an interview.

What is the Assessment Test of English Language Learners?
It is the initial assessment carried by school board staff to the English language proficiency of all English language learners.
Students will be placed at ESL Levels A, B,C, D or E depending on their performance at the assessment procedure.
Who Should Take the Assessment?
Students of all eligible school ages are required to take the test in order to find out the most appropriate placement where student needs as English language learners will be met.
Assessment Test Format
The test will include:
- structured interview to assess oral communication skills (i.e., listening and speaking);
- an assessment of reading comprehension;
- an assessment of student writing
- an assessment of mathematical knowledge and skills
